Sylvan R. Shemitz Memorial Scholarship
Sylvan R. Shemitz

In honor of its founder Sylvan R. Shemitz, one of the innovative forces behind asymmetric lighting, The Lighting Quotient initiated a new student scholarship in partnership with the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. Designed for the future generation of lighting designers, engineers and architects, all second, third, fourth and fifth year undergraduate or graduate students in accredited lighting degree programs are eligible to apply.

The Lighting Quotient established an endowment, starting with a $50,000 donation, and will annually award a scholarship to one student based on the dividends of the endowment. In this inaugural year, the scholarship value is $2,500.

Each year students are required to submit the following:

  • A 1,500 word essay to demonstrate their understanding and vision for the future of the architectural lighting industry. This year’s essay topic was: The Next Generation of Lighting: How would you bring a historical lighting installation into the next generation of sustainability?
  • Drawings, schedules and renderings are acceptable to supplement the essay.
  • Two letters of recommendation from principal instructors at the student’s current lighting program. One of the letters may be from someone who supervised the student in an internship program.
  • A completed scholarship application form.

Submission for the 2010 school year is now closed. Winner will be announced in late Fall.
